The Ernest S. Burch, Jr. Papers consist of the personal and anthropological research papers of Dr. Ernest "Tiger" Burch. Included in the papers are Burch's journals, personal field notes, and personal and professional correspondence. Also included are research notes, field notes, correspondence, planning documents, interview transcripts and related materials for many of Burch's professional projects and publications. In addition, the papers include Burch's extensive general research files consisting of articles, reprints, bibliographies, census data, subject files and lists of archival and organizational sources of information. Burch's maps also form a part of the collection. The maps include working and final versions of maps created by Burch for publications and projects, as well as maps used by Burch as reference sources.

Ernest S. "Tiger" Burch was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 17, 1938. As a young man, Burch was interested in becoming a naturalist. He applied for and was accepted as a junior member of Donald B. MacMillan's 29th Arctic Expedition in 1954, an experience which influenced his decision to become an anthropologist.
